Distinctive Unit Insignia

Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a red heart, surmounted overall by four gold swords interlaced saltirewise, guards, hilts and pommels in base above a red scroll bearing the inscription SUPPORT TO SUSTAIN in gold letters.

Symbolism
A sword is symbolic of authority, and interlacing of support; together they refer to the overall mission of the organization.  The heart and saltire allude to Alabama, The Heart of Dixie, and as the capital, the units home station, Montgomery is the heart of Alabama.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 122d General Support Group on 12 October 1971.  It was redesignated for the 122d Support Group on 3 April 1972.  The insignia was redesignated for the 31st Support Group on 27 April 1978.
